The Artisan in Residence program is a collaboration between the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Drawing on the Center’s work with the Smithsonian Artisan Initiative and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and the robust collections and programs at the museum, the program supports interactive learning and exchange opportunities.
The week-long residencies bring artisans from across Asia and the diaspora to Washington, D.C., to lead dynamic activities for museum visitors that highlight their craft traditions and cultures. Visiting artisans also have opportunities to engage with the D.C. craft community.
Program Goals
- Connect with the Center’s global network of artisans to enhance relationships and increase collaborative opportunities.
- Provide dynamic new public programs for museum visitors with increased interactions between the public and artisans.
- Support professional development and cultural exchange opportunities for artisans.
Each residency is a unique experience curated by the artisan in residence with the support of the program team and focusing on a specific craft practice. Public programs highlight artisans’ expertise, culture, and stories, while cultural exchange activities provide connections and experiences across D.C.’s vibrant cultural scene. Residencies include artist talks, demonstrations, and workshops paired with museum tours, studio visits, and more.
