Artist profile: Founemousso Sakaliba

Founemousso Sakaliba participated in the 2003 Folklife Festival. She began her bogolan career after her husband died.  Not knowing how to support her family, she began training with Nakounté Diarra and is now the president of the Association of Widows and Orphans in Sabalibougou, which empowers members of the organization by teaching them bogolan. Because of the increased demand for bogolan, artists have begun to apply the patterns using stencils, which enables the painter to produce fabric much more quickly. Sakaliba has pursued the route of modernization and now primarily creates stencil-made bogolan.
