Plan Your Visit to the 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival opens in two weeks! Join us on the National Mall between Fourth and Seventh streets in Washington, D.C., June 29–July 4 and July 7–10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with special events beginning at 6:30 p.m. Want to kick off the event with us? Join us in the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building on June 29 at 10 a.m. for the opening ceremony.

Huib Schippers Named Next Director and Curator of Smithsonian Folkways

Musician, scholar, educator, and former record store manager Huib Schippers has been named the new director and curator of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Schippers is the third director of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings since it began in 1987, when the institution acquired Folkways Records from the family of founder Moses Asch.

Smithsonian Folkways Acquires Arhoolie Records

We have acquired the revered Arhoolie Records, which is known for “down home” blues, folk, jazz, country, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Mexican American, and world music. The acquisition includes more than 350 albums released since 1960, featuring artists such as Clifton Chenier, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Flaco Jiménez, Mance Lipscomb, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Big Mama Thornton, Bukka White, and Big Joe Williams. Until the albums are available on folkways.si.edu later this year, you can browse the Arhoolie catalog on Amazon and Spotify.

July 3 Concert Celebrates NEA National Heritage Fellows

The 2016 Ralph Rinzler Memorial Concert at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival celebrates 50 years of the National Endowment for the Arts and previews a 2017 Festival program by featuring extraordinary musicians from across the country who have received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship, the nation’s highest award for excellence in the folk and traditional arts. Performers include Jerry Douglas, Rahim AlHaj, and The Chuck Brown Band. This free concert starts at 6:30 p.m. on the Ralph Rinzler Concert Stage.

They support our sustainability efforts, interact with visitors at the information booths, help with audiovisual documentation, translate and interpret for participants, and more. Basque, Spanish, and French speakers are encouraged to apply.
