Bermuda Connections: A Cultural Resource Guide for Classrooms serves as a “toolkit” for student exploration of the cultural identity and heritage of Bermuda. The kit was originally developed and tested by a team of Smithsonian and Bermudian researchers and educators, and distributed to every classroom in Bermuda. We hope that the downloadable (PDF) guide and accompanying video will inspire similar folklife and cultural heritage exploration projects in classrooms and communities across the globe.
In the video, we meet six middle- and high-school students and their families. As the young people interview traditional culture bearers in their communities (including a gombey masquerade costume maker, a master kite maker, a cook of Portuguese delicacies, and a fitted dinghy racer boat builder), they discover both the diversity and the common threads of their shared heritage.

Bermuda Connections: A Cultural Resource Guide for Classrooms was produced by the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage as a result of a collaborative project of the Smithsonian Institution and the Bermuda Government, including cultural documentation, field schools and a teacher fellowship growing out of the 2001 Smithsonian Folklife Festival Program, Bermuda Connections. The guide was made possible by the generous financial support of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation under the auspices of the Bermuda Connections Smithsonian Folklife Festival Charitable Trust.
The guide is divided into chapters for easier access to the materials.
